A Well-Read Wife

I have always loved to read, and especially to read things that will inspire and empower me to become the best version of myself. While I was researching for my own book on Catholic marriage (coming soon!), I read many wonderful texts. I feel that several of those books particularly helped me become a better wife, and I would love to recommend them to other ladies striving to be the best spouse they can be! Note that the first book on this list is not Catholic, or even Christian; the others are all Catholic.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain (not Catholic)

I am a very outgoing extrovert, from a family of extroverts — but I married an introvert. This book helped demystify some of his behaviors for me. It also made me appreciate his unique gifts and contributions as a quieter, less attention-seeking person. We have a strong societal bias towards extroversion, which implies that all the poor introverts need extroverts to help them survive. This book helped me see and check that bias, and even to realize how often I, poor extrovert that I am, rely on my steady and contented husband to get me through.

Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father by Donald H. Calloway, MIC

Why is there a book about a man on this list? Well, like Quiet, this beautiful consecration from Marian Press (my publisher!!) made me better appreciate what a father and husband truly is, and to love that more as a wife. Our Lady, the ultimate example of a holy wife, was supported and encouraged in her vocation by her most chaste spouse. St. Joseph demonstrates the power of prayer and silence, two things that will help a person grow in any vocation to which God has called him or her.

Forever: A Catholic Devotional for Your Marriage by Bobby and Jackie Angel

This devotional would be great to read alongside your husband. Each day, you will get a bite size chunk of marital wisdom, working through the vows of marriage and our calling to holiness through this vocation. With gentleness and humor, the Bobby and Jackie Angel offer practical ideas to help you grow in virtue in your marriage each day!

Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin: The Extraordinary Parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux by Helene Mongin

I read many biographies of married saints in my research, but the Martins are sort of in a league of their own. Saints Louis and Zelie are the only couple in the history of the Church thus far to be canonized simultaneously. Their youngest daughter, Thérèse, is also a canonized and beloved saint, and another daughter is being examined for the process as well. The Martins endured incredible trials, such as the early death of multiple children and Zelie’s own death to breast cancer. However, through it all they lived out a beautiful, joyful, self-sacrificing love for one another and their children. You can also read about their holy marriage from St. Thérèse’s perspective in her autobiography, Story of a Soul.

Familiaris Consortio by Saint John Paul II

If you want a clear and straightforward explanation of what the Church teaches about marriage and family life, look no further than Familiaris consortio. This papal document will reaffirm in your important role as a spouse and give you new gusto for your marriage! I read this in a printed booklet format, but you can also access the whole text in English for free at the Vatican website

I hope these are inspiring and edifying to you! Happy reading!
